The affiliate marketing space is filled with offers, internet traffic sources, promotion techniques and an
0 L) W$ d& Y3 m0 aever-increasing list of gurus who claim to know (and be able to teach you) the “next big thing” where! [( E6 {( V; }5 S
you'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing+ L8 e- l0 ~# w1 ?' E. W9 H5 ?# ?
with any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.6 r8 ?( \3 P1 k h
Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash2 T5 D$ T. }/ Y! \5 ]: t
flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and
8 S( |/ t0 h( E1 S. f6 J; ]7 g, ^the ability for a marketer to be a one person shop and make an incredible amount of money with low

The cold hard reality is this: virtually everything in the space is changeable, what worked today can

Your competitors are willing to work at this around the clock. This isn't a push button, instant business

marketing has spent countless hours learning, trying new things, launching, tweaking, improving,
& z8 g# _! D6 \: y( N+ C3 H/ Ktrying something else, failing. There isn't any guaranteed recipe for success except this: persistence.& ~2 l* D( S( `/ ^( M Y
With that in mind, this guide will explore just one internet traffic source, PPV, and is set up to get you& z0 v) b. q+ ]$ O/ H' `
started building PPV campaigns right away from start to finish. With that said, time to jump in and get" ]* f7 U; w# | y

1.Web Hosting- preferably a VPS (virtual private server) or higher (e.g. Beyond Hosting, Hostgator)
! R. q. l3 O& w( {+ f2.Affiliate account at a CPA Network (e.g. Ads4Dough, Neverblue)
/ {, ^3 j+ R1 x: |$ H3.Account at a CPV/PPV traffic network (e.g. LeadImpact, Trafficvance, MediaTraffic)
) b6 a# k0 {9 R8 \; J4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab)/ r5 P: A8 O# j/ e- f @) F6 S- O
This guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic
1 ^5 ?* o L4 W/ }7 o+ D7 w% ~, iwith PPV.
! ^+ n1 s! z% L; c! b) EBasic Getting Started Definitions* ^/ s6 b% m# X3 A" G4 Z7 N
Affiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more
4 x: |8 Z+ E P2 t, b% Iaffiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main L+ v# {' @5 Y" Q

types off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).
- p& M8 o5 k. L" I7 PCost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate5 r3 y! i/ v8 u/ I; O
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,/ f# [7 n5 ^1 Q1 P% Z
Comission Junction or Clickbank./ o9 z. n3 M3 k/ H5 ^8 X
Cost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes2 j7 k) V3 R* I- F
an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
- D0 R, n- n8 a% w. T% M% a6 [buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.
$ E$ h0 g, H0 u: E% ]9 xAffiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
, `8 o4 k! C8 U& I' y" I; b; Aaccount, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else
3 t/ Y x& q' l. }# hrelated to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager0 t: {7 s1 D# I) U _
right from the start can really help you.6 Z! j9 D2 t4 H( X9 G0 Z: O
PPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served
; r6 u" k- U ]! Oin pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per; D- C Y2 a4 N8 U7 x! T
view, starting anywhere from .01 or .015. x4 L" n0 e% W: z. S! w: F
In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different1 I/ P9 Q6 C# {! Z, n) a4 R
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,
) n- D1 h6 l" A0 f- m5 ?. d- l" hMediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.
! Q( r* W8 E. `) X- b5 ~5 M, gDon't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?9 G7 k* H! W. i
No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window

8 E$ u6 K& R/ c8 g0 {1 S# RHow many popups get served to the visitor?
* H! ?2 z5 V5 lThe number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently
* m: W$ n& _8 U: |0 J/ y: t1 T8 K(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by8 c& S$ a9 J3 K+ W2 T
serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software) y. I- `* }- P$ I$ o
downloaded and still making a profit.
+ g! L* b( V, h$ x5 rIsn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?6 R7 Z# {) ? d& e& ~$ l
No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.
6 j, z$ N9 ^% V5 F, N0 g# c RCompanies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,8 n1 k( r: j) ~ q) j1 w
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so# G+ s4 M& h, W- B0 r) a4 I( C
that they can continue to have access to the incentive.+ D t2 i7 J1 L3 Q" s( Y

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network
" \! L% u8 [% H" }2 V( T; d- OIn order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place6 V6 X0 u- d8 X- v+ F
to start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across
- g2 o( [1 q* G! Ndifferent networks.: {( n X1 z) f# P* J- E6 T, g
Once you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)- @, }* Q% v% M6 t4 K
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after
8 R% L3 i8 O& l3 W& K" C( I kreceiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
! K; \" E+ h3 a1 Q1 Opart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get
: w7 j7 l! ?) z+ s+ c5 G' X8 |# Dyou on the phone.
& f5 M5 f u' k5 Z: G) n8 c9 z4 nOften, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after2 Z* R! Q, C+ `- F
you get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.

: K) L B' e% j: q, b( Dthe phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:

0 Q$ Z4 y x0 i$ n+ E) oDo you already have a website you will be using?
/ L5 w5 |2 M. x- D* g1 H/ wHow much is your advertising budget?
1 h( w. N8 o; i7 UWhat other networks are you a member of?
; Z- n/ p- O# e% l6 N3 c/ r8 pWho are your affiliate managers at these networks?4 H* }0 T$ Y* u
Do you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers?- x- K3 m3 M. Q G4 W
How much traffic can you drive?% l* J# J, H+ C- v
Do you have a personal recommendation from anyone who is already a member?/ E4 R! D; ]9 x, f; D/ ~0 S
Once you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your
+ f I- K0 _2 S& _8 a* p9 |application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be
8 c5 m* i3 y8 a7 Ppersistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate; a, L0 Q4 V/ G' E
for the network can be helpful.
) z& z0 Z9 d* C& eTo meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate
8 d9 e: g- f* H. @! b" ?7 Z5 m sSummit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network- D* X r; _' |0 R
owners are members of the PPVPlaybook.com forum and WickedFire. Sometimes just getting to know
* R- I6 U6 B/ f* h" Z% a: ipeople can open a lot of doors as far as networks are concerned.

Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager
) ?4 g$ S' F [: u0 G% R* ^6 r, C# Rand make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.
2 b9 i# ^) S3 H u. P/ bFrankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their
* A( h# b4 }. w% o) ~weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get( x( u9 L- y1 @/ L A/ Z5 ^3 Y( i& [

0 L) Q( ^( C7 O! c, j4 {$ YGetting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
" c8 l7 i1 `- L; |- P tabout internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
! {$ q) A+ N! X" W, y) `2 |& {; ?host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with2 m7 q% R* q' c, {
whoever else is on the same server as you.* A4 ~' n# ]1 G1 [) C
Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast
5 e4 x7 Q# X* ^8 `0 aenough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3
6 i, ?7 g6 T* b9 g+ r. jseconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.
- y4 C5 T6 c e$ C. S' g& C7 o. {5 uTo explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a
7 L- t R) w# m4 e4 jhouse full of roommates (hosting customers)., r+ _" X. O# s5 X2 r
In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside* n: m) R8 G* u) \* d" |4 |
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will7 E8 H2 X- S9 \0 V& i' ^
fit.; _' C5 h v! u! ? I" [. t
Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than; g( y" p- d& c Y6 Z! B
the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate$ i' F/ J: ~' [0 F! s! m
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.$ w7 r$ `9 \ Y6 C( S
If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For9 m$ Y3 W, @. v K
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.7 A! J, }0 d' E0 z
In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
' t+ j0 V4 h4 D" C3 ^* y/ _+ einside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is' J9 k8 g* ?6 `: l7 ?
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time./ I# e9 _) X9 e- `( M
A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
' `: U% G# U8 S4 [7 T$ q/ dbelong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
) i& y, P/ B6 t$ a8 Y' `4 [traffic, faster.
& d: A# M w* aAt the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.

where you're going to host your tracking software and your landing pages if you decide to make them.
) M1 W0 w% V4 o' @7 y' w# ]0 yOftentimes people wonder if they should have a specific domain name or a generic one. One generic,
. ]1 |/ V, Z. L! w, Rbland one is fine to start with, to host both your landing pages and tracking software. The .com,& C7 Z3 I) q5 d1 n
.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a& O4 b5 C; B% E& ?% _0 k
term or build a whole website.( ^/ E" [! p: F
After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install
6 ]$ I/ l# O' O" Qtracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your2 F. l9 |. D8 v& p& h5 f) J. f& h! h
conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper
2 k/ Z: S D# \2 W$ S. D, Ltracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.
+ M4 @ o1 J* i) {4 ATo do this, first set up either Prosper202 or CPV Lab on your hosting account. Setting up the software* \8 ~8 ?+ }2 @1 b

Tracking 202 is the hosted version of Prosper202. You can create a free account and then build your
0 E+ j( }, m( H- I4 Y5 X' U1 f' b5 Xcampaigns using the Tracking202 internet-based interface which is similar to the Prosper202 user

If you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of
V. f$ s% k1 H" Dyour campaigns and through which all of your affiliate links are run- is at the mercy of the Tracking202

Also, your tracking software reveals the most critical part of your campaigns- the converting keywords

potentially leave you open to huge risk if someone else caught on to what offer and keywords you" s2 E' f7 F7 ` H {
were using.

When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first7 W; x% r; ^& s& X% L$ F/ N" P
page as contextual, downloadable software. This $1,000 Walmart gift card email submit offer says
) \ s# B8 k8 r$ x: V. [) jthat all traffic is accepted.4 x1 |& Q7 \ M; d* s; p) q
First, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.
/ r X% u, j, s) Z5 GThis is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can5 _$ p3 H+ D, c K( @2 {
get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.

track my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
* h+ k/ ?4 m: b6 |- WIn Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:

Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL
