Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash

5 r4 E1 a! ~1 K* p& B9 qAffiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more
( V; E+ S) q, [8 Laffiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main8 L/ E% D& i6 C

types off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).7 S4 }' }/ F) a: j+ G; H
Cost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate; U# p2 g, ^7 U( Z0 N' l8 m( x
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,
+ E% G( ^5 X n. y; c& VComission Junction or Clickbank.
$ r2 o M8 |! W7 L! mCost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes, ?5 m$ q/ H1 b8 \
an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes O2 a2 D" r" z3 d3 l5 c5 O' o0 x1 `
buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.9 f/ Q1 o9 y5 |0 F d8 D- P
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
/ ~) E. Q& M' l; V i) a6 baccount, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else
8 `& Y5 M( I2 T3 y( R- L8 Q+ k) hrelated to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
# h1 u& `! f ?& ^1 y5 u4 \: gright from the start can really help you.
, A" N s' C( y/ ^/ R f2 q5 ^! XPPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served
7 c9 k( @0 {7 O# e+ C- N. e) r! Ain pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per1 L& I j/ q7 m1 b/ K; w
view, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.
! G; ~$ j4 F8 J5 Z! _In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different. C9 p" Q0 _5 l1 `$ L- J
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,9 B( Z) L$ Q8 h# w
MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.
0 P2 w6 r) t7 q9 P8 h6 jDon't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?( O; {: q1 W( z4 @0 c" z% n+ o
No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window$ O. |$ m& H; M

How many popups get served to the visitor?9 n5 l* U+ Q- I" m B7 _+ p
The number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently- N4 f% X4 Y2 b+ Z2 j
(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by' F$ |, G) X5 r- _2 S9 b( e0 g
serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software
( H2 k* s9 I- T' Tdownloaded and still making a profit.$ q, I, H: x, f: E. s# M& I
Isn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?! O3 K% _( D- P3 D( _7 w- J" l3 M
No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.$ T8 S$ f7 d. p1 g
Companies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,3 C" h; d( j7 o7 ]! q
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so
( ` _) t& c+ B& tthat they can continue to have access to the incentive.

5 h1 ~% F' R& `In order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
4 G$ G+ I8 h$ |- Z" m3 Oto start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across
& U/ o- ~8 q3 \, Adifferent networks. c ?) K w" `: ]: J
Once you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher). y, ?3 \5 p% w, u: \% F
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after
$ z( k4 i( o& ]7 yreceiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
1 F6 f# [8 } q$ ?0 wpart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get
. c, |; o0 Y2 \) R. ^you on the phone., h0 T9 ?9 P) N( o6 Z2 ^
Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after
! c6 R, l# i7 g0 E* y. G8 jyou get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.3 _# a& N7 S, G
You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over
* M, {& W' z0 ~6 B ythe phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:
M; m2 ], v8 i# P U7 t, bWhat methods do you use to market offers?
5 O8 w, C' |# v& L1 Q8 ]Do you already have a website you will be using?, y+ H& p( L$ { d5 F! E K
How much is your advertising budget?6 [7 b! V" G5 B! B/ y! v- D9 o
What other networks are you a member of?% D1 m; o- B" u8 l! P& |8 A
Who are your affiliate managers at these networks?
# J6 e& q" R6 f0 Y) U& o# ?Do you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers?

+ V* _3 n @1 Y' @Do you have a personal recommendation from anyone who is already a member?
/ Z: V' D: J. X+ z% j" rOnce you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your
. b/ e& B, h& e! K5 H* e9 }application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be8 f2 U* Z9 v$ a
persistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate% h) \' i* M( O0 i
for the network can be helpful.
5 b% F5 z% ]' Q* n' CTo meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate
5 }5 Z- {1 O+ A" b9 }/ j. vSummit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network q* I* x, E$ E! d* g/ I- Q. c

After You Join a CPA Network# T% }9 T" o0 }+ J3 j! E& a
Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager+ e. H" D* c7 }9 G6 T
and make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.$ m6 r+ P7 Z2 M- \) \
Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their& V3 i) @" I# N3 d( L& g' {4 ~3 Z
weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get8 s7 V. l: x) [" z( t; _

0 W4 P- L# R% F0 ?Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said3 r8 K3 R' {3 k) a4 @! l
about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared$ u/ {% s% h: P% v# @7 c8 Y5 ]' o
host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with
1 {! U9 J. k. F5 B+ uwhoever else is on the same server as you.3 b5 O) r* b+ T- I/ f4 l
Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast! \2 n; ]7 O1 E* t5 e
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3
, ^1 x4 R$ [9 T" ^+ n4 x$ Cseconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck. t: b, |+ t$ z6 d8 A5 Z
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a) ]3 _9 C, l0 m) U, U
house full of roommates (hosting customers).- p. R; A: y7 T
In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside
7 r: ~: Y; V- Kthe fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will

' r# n* I' _$ ^% L, F8 [' Y9 uSay your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than

If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For
; k6 e5 n! W/ E5 W! O3 x+ Rany type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.
) i: {. j2 \1 w F9 I3 Q, X# G$ iIn the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
8 }" v9 l3 `% I( r7 }. d: binside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is9 X. z \+ y$ w+ y& p% r
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.) y9 Y1 i9 j7 ], E I
A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources# s2 s# M$ y+ c# N$ G' {1 j9 J
belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
# v# R0 H; K) m# b2 Ttraffic, faster.
# U& Q7 \0 N( UAt the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.

After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install- q6 U- c) n$ k! P$ j& E9 C
tracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your+ _7 w# c9 ^+ V' {1 s8 O. O
conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper" N2 T2 E) ]0 n! |

track my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
