Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash

4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab)

Basic Getting Started Definitions
6 Q' p/ E# I F0 v' r. G) }& LAffiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more5 q. G" k& V) D3 z b
affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main3 @) V, P6 S' b$ f- i5 E9 e* y

. X' z/ ?; G$ ^& {0 O( @$ xCost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate
0 a2 K/ k) u* S6 d8 x8 areceives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,5 _7 u- a) J" }4 F3 V5 H, J
Comission Junction or Clickbank.8 J0 \# V4 C9 S
Cost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes
# f$ U/ x: a, |an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
( R; P3 w# f9 Q( ?1 J( Mbuying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.
: ?/ y+ v! F$ \6 P& }& oAffiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
* K& ^$ D6 Y6 D B' y+ Vaccount, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else6 y8 ^( x& T' `
related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
% O( y- [: D6 X9 |- y: O9 Wright from the start can really help you.
0 p6 B- r5 Q- ~: V2 m- ?; F( _2 U8 RPPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served
- b3 F; d9 ^4 }- Fin pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per
% i5 t) B4 J2 wview, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.
" r6 B" t, Z4 ^. `/ `+ MIn order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different
8 T+ `/ c+ m9 y+ Ncompanies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,: f# o D- S6 ?$ j {2 a
MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.

How many popups get served to the visitor?

serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software

9 ^# i, ~' a4 ]) _* ZIsn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?( k+ r+ K4 p! d0 z* @8 K3 D
No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.
: C$ U- D5 L* oCompanies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,. U! U2 y& A' ^% p4 c
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so
% Y. L& P! r9 v g( b; |: hthat they can continue to have access to the incentive.- o& t) p$ T# l+ e) K( U7 w$ N

8 l! M1 `: D& I# Y0 {In order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
. z E6 ~ a; l7 V' i: hto start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across g, M$ s+ O! D$ h* ^' H- A
different networks.
- N) _1 Y; k. ]' J! ^Once you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher). k& @/ \2 X; X [8 C( x m
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after
( f' V9 u8 B0 d q- q5 q6 ~receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical
) M0 j7 a& h: a9 C7 W Spart of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get- C" e4 `9 L; k' j! P" v; V/ J
you on the phone.8 k( T1 d# J1 U& k3 ?, n
Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after9 U% ^6 x. V# N
you get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward., J; Y, F! P' F
You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over
, f6 _$ `* q+ x' lthe phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:

# A9 ]2 n% z; X( }Do you already have a website you will be using?

How much traffic can you drive?

application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be0 S" y9 D) G5 c8 t. D5 I
persistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate. ]6 E: U/ v$ P* u1 U

To meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate/ @% F; d) n* j
Summit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network

Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager0 @; t, n. U3 @/ w5 W, }" |
and make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.* P3 i# b, x2 R/ f
Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their* D- g+ o8 [0 D* M
weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get( f3 A: z- r9 g

larger, they can really help you with your marketing efforts, scaling campaigns and getting payout

Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
3 i5 z' l. S; ^2 [! o! W1 }/ {about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared9 g, C4 |2 i) r3 N. v
host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with
- ^5 ? ?5 x1 ]whoever else is on the same server as you.
' R" l! K( y1 [! Q8 I) C' }Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast; ]; a" v7 M: V( q, \: ]7 m
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3
8 g$ c* Q% m/ q' {7 |4 c, rseconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.3 T( U2 @& r0 K0 D% ]5 A2 }
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a" x, @$ Q/ t- T) x# y2 f
house full of roommates (hosting customers).0 s7 B" v" ]! ^& J- Y8 |
In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside# L( d9 ~. R& h+ R; c9 _
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will
) f% W/ N0 Z5 Q3 b. Z, Gfit.7 B6 w' E# G' b0 z# P
Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than
: X( C/ Y& x% P( z; M8 Tthe rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate
/ g' O: F. l L i- u! _their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.
; w( }# s( T4 a( J( [( A+ C& s& xIf you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For7 p) o3 i7 s# p2 T. P6 Q4 _
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.
_2 }4 }- |7 `( ~1 o# Y/ p( YIn the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
2 [, E, k7 w6 e0 qinside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is7 J, G/ {# ^4 g. e" Z! y0 c
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.
) f1 D8 v1 e# ^! G& eA dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources9 j8 D# ]. t* e( n4 i% q* v
belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
+ Y" X; A' L7 B. X+ T7 L' h4 dtraffic, faster.
" M( s5 C% W. E9 W* h" ~/ {; x- dAt the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.

where you're going to host your tracking software and your landing pages if you decide to make them.
* v5 A' w+ m5 X( zOftentimes people wonder if they should have a specific domain name or a generic one. One generic,: A- }* {# `7 K
bland one is fine to start with, to host both your landing pages and tracking software. The .com,: o+ ~+ t5 q4 |) O7 g& K
.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a

After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install9 Y: t: L$ C, L/ Y) E" n$ K
tracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your
) L4 N: K+ z( x& f/ ^conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper( M( I8 d; Y0 y

If you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of. e& L9 D: n5 E* v& G% |7 C8 S# C

interface, and their hosting.

When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first: U& S9 N2 X* o9 a2 \

First, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.7 Y8 e! a3 _3 x5 u( d' M
This is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can

Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL8 \# s! j9 r( D
from your software into the box that says 'Enter URL of image to load'.
