8 h( I z2 N# s5 @: ~8 q) T5 \5 I8 Cyou'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing
( D/ R: p# e# b9 [1 [1 q; c0 k/ B9 Hwith any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.
. o+ @( Y; {2 p" i! Y8 V/ LAffiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash
' m# s! P* T6 O' [3 Oflow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and

With that in mind, this guide will explore just one internet traffic source, PPV, and is set up to get you

1.Web Hosting- preferably a VPS (virtual private server) or higher (e.g. Beyond Hosting, Hostgator)

This guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic+ |8 F0 t% }6 l/ \* J

Basic Getting Started Definitions0 v* Q5 ?1 R" b
Affiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more
5 V5 A5 \' ?" T* e; U1 @affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main

! [) T Y! q7 |% W1 O7 jtypes off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).
* I/ }# S+ G( Z, ~+ xCost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate, S4 I, n& i0 ?' g0 f2 n
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,
, b- ]# y! m% FComission Junction or Clickbank.1 |3 p8 ]3 A" `' U& [1 L
Cost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes
8 T* C3 K/ [+ pan action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes3 l+ ? ?) K5 g+ O: n$ J/ K
buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue. @, b" l3 P4 r1 s5 @& v* [' b8 I( s
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's% ~/ D, |" b4 i1 x+ T0 q
account, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else" N' u/ ]7 a& U; \7 ?* u6 K- N
related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
R% a3 i' j/ D+ q( A$ fright from the start can really help you.
, }! o7 U/ i, i7 Y6 |0 ~' mPPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served, [; j6 I8 B9 q8 S& h8 e; w0 T
in pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per
8 u. \0 t; G( h- @view, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.3 |, S' i, J W8 M- y
In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different3 S! O1 b; e- P6 W3 F3 r( C: ]! [
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,; r& [3 Q* l% h6 i: P+ j# K' O
MediaTraffic, and AdOn Network. R$ l# d5 S& M' _0 _. x
Don't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?2 @7 p8 T+ Z9 h4 m( t
No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window

The number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently
# N# u* ~, e& ?(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by% ~" J1 T- ^. c4 m1 a$ H* L7 i
serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software

Isn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?, R8 \% l) s' D/ s) L! p) ^: D0 T
No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.
+ y5 o3 s6 T8 uCompanies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,
( N3 b5 c- h7 z9 Stoolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so
7 c: l8 `5 o1 E: u ethat they can continue to have access to the incentive.- S; t* }8 b+ u0 ^/ j. I" G+ U

. x/ R0 C: A8 _$ JIn order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place9 }: C% @2 z3 B8 _* j
to start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across6 a) I' ^9 p* j4 z! O
different networks.
( E: {, x! R7 E, ]8 g7 l. ^5 u+ ]3 WOnce you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)" j1 j4 Y& n( R( \4 O
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after
4 J3 V2 Y3 U. Kreceiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical# i8 z" `7 g' L# i
part of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get& S; J C, ], M. Y# G3 e o
you on the phone.8 Y$ K1 J1 f; P9 I7 [, M# _
Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after" q; P9 o" l4 k7 k% c% P
you get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.
1 s0 `! `- }; I* t5 TYou might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over" \0 }, L; ]* K6 Q9 U% Y- R9 i
the phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:
7 \3 g: x- P0 ] p+ v: dWhat methods do you use to market offers?' F$ L* {# B8 X( Y) k d/ ]
Do you already have a website you will be using?
. U& W i/ Y. X1 v- {6 \7 L' wHow much is your advertising budget?' X' H& t# X; u5 t
What other networks are you a member of?$ L* y7 {0 A0 H7 M1 h
Who are your affiliate managers at these networks?4 d! V+ H; D. N
Do you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers?

Do you have a personal recommendation from anyone who is already a member?
& L- V. g) f9 s; z# L5 fOnce you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your0 D8 z! j+ V) H0 ?- q% m( U
application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be
+ m4 ^& V2 Y- q& \, Gpersistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate- g S4 N% u* n# R6 d: T3 {
for the network can be helpful.
' ^/ d) H, \0 u0 p f- ~: kTo meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate
; u" D& O: K/ @0 Q4 JSummit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network
K: k1 s2 P/ r3 _* X% Y0 towners are members of the PPVPlaybook.com forum and WickedFire. Sometimes just getting to know
/ s& U0 |% F( Y, t: z7 [' tpeople can open a lot of doors as far as networks are concerned.

Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager7 u4 i1 n5 S6 l. j3 s, A' ?. l
and make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.
1 `& {# F, \8 g# ?( tFrankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their ?; Y+ C8 g& m0 G* y! N4 G
weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get

larger, they can really help you with your marketing efforts, scaling campaigns and getting payout% m* m. E( |' e' g& C! Z

Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
2 C+ E" \+ C) s1 rabout internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
) t9 _# p: f) y+ r" Zhost for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with+ R2 B. N4 W; u
whoever else is on the same server as you.
% b7 X! ? p! o9 r" K2 WSpeed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast7 a6 x8 v' f) y
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3/ l% P" k( E; m$ w+ d
seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck. n5 \, j) X+ ?* b* G6 \3 g0 e7 O
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a
. w0 a0 m+ Y2 n& q2 whouse full of roommates (hosting customers).
2 W7 I% c# y g' d- F: iIn shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside7 E* N! }- a* z
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will
5 n: ]1 F' e- Xfit.
+ o2 ?6 }. h A8 o; ASay your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than
9 N% G# p+ G! r' O% _the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate- u" j: a, u. h- R) p& B6 M6 e% T
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.( z; t) S' D( ~. |
If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For; n' y" r8 N3 ^/ d4 f
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.$ _, `% H% f( [3 G
In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
+ p. b5 F7 E3 j1 U2 o7 x, Finside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is
9 M" @* t( _5 s8 B9 ~ ypartitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.
) k' h( E5 I. ^. d' {4 |& m& XA dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
( u, e3 J4 a3 D, X( i. R7 x! qbelong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more; a* W" u! @) D0 b d5 g; R
traffic, faster.
3 Q+ e0 O& ?) c9 X, P; \. z( ]At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.7 t3 `8 {* V1 z6 J( c

Once you buy your hosting it's time to also buy a domain name and get it on your hosting. This is

Oftentimes people wonder if they should have a specific domain name or a generic one. One generic,6 o4 s8 x! Y- U) B" O
bland one is fine to start with, to host both your landing pages and tracking software. The .com,4 L+ W4 A0 J* \
.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a
# w" u* x" n9 i3 h1 Zterm or build a whole website.
7 c0 k- g+ ~$ U, z7 c, z0 {' T( GAfter you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install; @; l+ N% H5 L! J( ~- p9 i) T
tracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your: u- @& |5 V$ F7 n3 s
conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper
4 D0 A/ ~$ L% P/ {! M& rtracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.' F+ D. V! C2 @1 T4 u
To do this, first set up either Prosper202 or CPV Lab on your hosting account. Setting up the software

area.
! l/ `6 D" C5 Y) Y. cIf you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of

When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first

4 e5 l) s$ e7 Y8 f7 l" q' XFirst, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can4 e: C. v: L5 [: y
track my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
9 J" l- W( o* rIn Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:

In CPV Lab, your pixel is located under the screen where you input a new campaign, toward the

Make sure that Image is selected under 'Choose a pixel type', name your pixel and now paste the URL
