The affiliate marketing space is filled with offers, internet traffic sources, promotion techniques and an, V: i* a5 C6 P, R
ever-increasing list of gurus who claim to know (and be able to teach you) the “next big thing” where
+ W8 z0 W! y8 c# ~8 N" Byou'll wake up to millions of dollars overnight. For anyone who has ACTUALLY done affiliate marketing
8 t' m: j" o: B, `with any success, these claims are laughable and far from the truth.' F& C* B/ u5 O8 o7 P
Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash# S- [4 Z2 t( X, V7 M
flow management. The main benefits are the low barrier to entry compared to other businesses, and
s% H$ t7 V$ U% u- Gthe ability for a marketer to be a one person shop and make an incredible amount of money with low3 F! F6 M' W, `" T% G
overhead.
0 K2 m( B% ?5 G7 T' cThe winners in this business are the ones with persistence when nothing works, who know there's

The cold hard reality is this: virtually everything in the space is changeable, what worked today can

learning experience available to anyone with a few hundred bucks and the ability to open an9 E# A2 N5 [& A4 Z

Your competitors are willing to work at this around the clock. This isn't a push button, instant business

With that in mind, this guide will explore just one internet traffic source, PPV, and is set up to get you
+ x0 f1 @# B- B7 P& P( Hstarted building PPV campaigns right away from start to finish. With that said, time to jump in and get

Things you need to get started:

, v1 K4 U8 I9 Z7 u2.Affiliate account at a CPA Network (e.g. Ads4Dough, Neverblue)
; F2 e5 O1 I7 ?! { y: d3 i6 I6 _1 ~3.Account at a CPV/PPV traffic network (e.g. LeadImpact, Trafficvance, MediaTraffic)% U4 I- Z' G& D4 H8 D
4.Tracking Setup to Track down to the keyword/url level (e.g. Prosper202 or CPVLab)/ w8 s- u6 W, ?
This guide describes from start to finish, how to get started in affiliate marketing by running traffic
9 q) y. N) y( k1 L) I. lwith PPV.
( y& O# F1 O' j2 w/ [Basic Getting Started Definitions
7 G( Y0 e" G$ V5 A0 kAffiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more$ `9 S. a) v# S5 L. u7 X
affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main2 y( @ B1 M& h: @0 M9 g

5 C. v! X# H6 Gtypes off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA).
; u& A6 N* w! q# {5 kCost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate2 m. N2 I: \* ^
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,/ O. u, ~6 b! Z: N+ z# v! F
Comission Junction or Clickbank., a) I, c& |; b# R
Cost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes
! W& N3 s8 U) u+ jan action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes
# {+ v1 U0 U& Wbuying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.3 V2 ^( t/ h! z4 V7 L. f
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
$ A3 l; D. c" `2 raccount, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else
& c" v# Z r5 krelated to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
+ l+ s, X' G- Q; ^- _right from the start can really help you.; m q0 {8 B6 r" `
PPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served% ~ O0 N0 i6 g
in pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per
" n1 [ [( x5 w; o# Jview, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.
6 b' P+ T5 V7 Z# FIn order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different( O$ t& S ^! q4 q1 x& |
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,
! e% h/ G5 M' _7 p) F L+ yMediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.
, X0 G1 g. Y$ GDon't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?
* F9 l7 F$ X# A5 Y1 `No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window& d" S2 t" f0 e8 H6 K5 q& \

How many popups get served to the visitor?! _& p. k) J( s. R* G- {$ [
The number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently
5 M6 I# k2 Y8 f1 v$ m \* F$ r# Q0 I4 Q(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by
/ }4 { L0 z) _7 o3 ]; I0 Q/ P: P4 Dserving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software

Isn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?" l& v3 D+ L% `0 r: z
No, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.% G0 v/ ?! C5 Y7 B
Companies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,
2 Z$ a, W; Y& s1 E2 Q" E: mtoolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network
( \$ [, O* E6 z+ BIn order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place- {' M! v; y$ {1 z
to start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across
8 ^8 w- E* I! T9 X7 I4 k# Bdifferent networks.8 V; t, i" F1 T9 j y! s# K
Once you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)
3 c; w r$ O! [3 S3 ^8 t. Oapplication and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after. _% y6 s+ T$ _6 z: }0 `) S
receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical) i' X3 i4 p. v$ b" w W, L: p
part of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get) S: f3 V4 h3 g. W8 w% t
you on the phone.6 f' l1 Y; T3 M0 l
Often, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after
. _; q' T5 {# ~+ a Lyou get accepted, so it's a good time to put your best food forward.8 K- E- Q+ v6 ~4 |1 L6 C
You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over% U" v0 Y g3 O9 N5 O0 b
the phone, but trust me, this part is critical. Have answers in mind for the questions:
7 H: T. }( E: l: w9 B9 u# T4 mWhat methods do you use to market offers?
' T& P1 z y7 L v. H% B+ y# @Do you already have a website you will be using?
( M" i, P6 b5 i) V$ wHow much is your advertising budget?1 j9 b3 K, M# @: @
What other networks are you a member of?1 H# ?4 o8 |' D
Who are your affiliate managers at these networks?0 ?3 ~5 B& m7 f; [
Do you use social media (Facebook, twitter, etc.) to market offers?

Do you have a personal recommendation from anyone who is already a member?
7 D7 A" s' W$ c$ ~) q, mOnce you provide satisfactory answers to these questions, the network will approve or deny your
0 F' q, W0 s4 y( M' F+ Zapplication. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be' f) i4 W8 Y' l4 }" |/ y! d
persistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate
$ b/ y& u% R0 \8 g5 Lfor the network can be helpful.
( P. W+ U6 o2 U* y( D/ ITo meet people from various networks, sometimes it can be effective to go to conferences like Affiliate" {3 u& h1 R1 x/ P0 s# \
Summit, or AdTech and make sure that you talk to people. Also, lots of affiliate managers and network
) o- F6 V" {3 U3 Gowners are members of the PPVPlaybook.com forum and WickedFire. Sometimes just getting to know
4 ?" w' w) p7 y" u) wpeople can open a lot of doors as far as networks are concerned.

Once you're a member of a CPA Network, it's a really good idea to reach out to your affiliate manager
* n5 _8 l2 v% v+ A7 X9 Yand make an attempt to get to know them a little bit.4 f" H8 w7 \; _9 J
Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their9 c, i4 A; [# W9 d+ R& Y- O4 R
weight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get. Y! E6 s/ N- l

Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said
6 v/ c: |- ?0 v" ]% yabout internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared9 M1 i) M" }/ E2 p
host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with' D+ c) X Y' d: C1 o; z7 @$ q
whoever else is on the same server as you.% \4 D) R, t! C9 ^3 ~
Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast2 X. W7 l9 C6 ]
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 34 O ]* L( b" K; R
seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.3 f: N v5 N; ]9 z, y# O
To explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a
: o1 i. G: Z }8 phouse full of roommates (hosting customers).
% ]6 R! V# P* C/ nIn shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside' S: f- h5 S5 s5 D1 L( Z! h
the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will
" ? P% D% S' ofit.
, d p9 E8 i' F$ [2 BSay your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than( O8 o0 X8 F. E/ j6 l9 L
the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate& n1 G/ t0 n5 Z! I; Q( ^: U
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.
4 S7 Y# k1 X. D0 O5 oIf you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For- [/ t! ~3 Q) p4 p; d/ ?
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.
: f8 E( d3 [4 ^' }3 Y& t4 eIn the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space2 x# k" L. b$ |, i7 V- ?( o% l% _
inside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is
8 Y' r8 e1 ] Jpartitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.
/ I# w+ k4 f& E9 L# kA dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources; Y# l2 G: ?+ d& M
belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
) M: M% D$ |- S3 s# f l! u F2 ztraffic, faster.( F5 k6 n9 Z. b& f" G% X8 o3 \ A% P
At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.. E' ?- |7 f! r+ {" j

.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a
1 K# [3 N0 o" e/ pterm or build a whole website.7 X6 \0 j5 y5 d0 I
After you buy hosting, a domain and get those all attached to each other, the next step is to install
6 v+ Z8 E/ X8 y7 o% E- V1 J+ _- ]1 ntracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your8 A: m% C& O0 H m% M5 q
conversions down to keyword level so that you can optimize your campaigns. Without proper) o1 K+ `% X3 d9 P/ `+ X/ b
tracking, it is impossible to know what is working and what isn't.
' z1 S9 g7 B. I VTo do this, first set up either Prosper202 or CPV Lab on your hosting account. Setting up the software

Tracking 202 is the hosted version of Prosper202. You can create a free account and then build your
" c2 ?2 U( p4 o: jcampaigns using the Tracking202 internet-based interface which is similar to the Prosper202 user0 p" P" q& h3 s# k
area.
4 M2 n* ]2 V: e" uIf you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of
) G& P$ P8 J4 O. t; S/ f: Iyour campaigns and through which all of your affiliate links are run- is at the mercy of the Tracking202" F% f+ _ p: a9 N/ A

Also, your tracking software reveals the most critical part of your campaigns- the converting keywords

When you choose an offer, always make sure that it accepts PPV traffic, usually this is listed on the first, y7 p g+ ~! D$ G K2 q4 B
page as contextual, downloadable software. This $1,000 Walmart gift card email submit offer says
5 t) X0 Q; H. T( Jthat all traffic is accepted.
5 S8 M3 s8 x9 A( Z2 _. MFirst, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits.( \( V* j' ?9 o) }! l
This is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can' a' ~9 J% V9 H+ r/ d" d/ K$ H- `
get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can
' U+ m$ n) ]9 e! htrack my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
/ I& ^. x2 B9 a1 uIn Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:

Next, I have to cut and paste this pixel into my offer at Ads4Dough.
