Affiliate marketing is simply a business, like any other. There are customers, sales, suppliers and cash

Basic Getting Started Definitions
% s8 _* [4 \0 S1 p% bAffiliate Marketing- is an internet-based marketing practice in which a business pays one or more; w9 {1 Z" _( x( f
affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. The two main

types off affiliate networks are cost per sale (CPS) and cost per action (CPA)./ X8 ]* a: n) Z+ \: [! J
Cost per sale (CPS) network- Every time an affiliate sends a visitor who buys a product, the affiliate0 @0 K x) `% |) @6 J
receives a commission on that product. An example would be the Amazon.com Associates program,0 d! h: a P9 S! a6 D
Comission Junction or Clickbank.
* ], p& F" j; s1 }8 H( JCost per action (CPA) network- The affiliate earns a commission by sending a visitor who completes, I9 G5 T9 `- ^: ~
an action like filling out a form, submitting their email address, signing up for a service or sometimes7 D1 e/ m7 k! U" G; c+ ~6 S" e& W: z5 K
buying a product. An example would be Ads4Dough or Neverblue.% h4 W$ B, T% P& j
Affiliate Manager- an affiliate's contact at a CPA affiliate network who is responsible for the affiliate's
$ o, m8 h+ X- _6 T5 Laccount, getting the affiliate approved for offers, bumping payouts and just about everything else' g" J- Y/ `7 J4 I" ^" d
related to an affiliate's account at the network. Having a good relationship with your affiliate manager
: a Z, {! S0 ~8 _) J/ gright from the start can really help you.
! D- T( }) T8 p! o, V4 H- \3 |, pPPV- means pay-per-view, and is also called CPV (cost-per-view). This type of internet traffic is served
& A9 N" c* Y0 W" Ein pop-up form through downloadable software on the visitor's computer. The advertiser pays per
- V7 C! R- [: T7 p* I. G. f4 vview, starting anywhere from .01 or .015.. k J9 {, X3 e7 F( @
In order to use this type of internet traffic, the affiliate can sign up with a number of different6 { c# p( b. d% `5 P! V! W1 {; v
companies who serve popups. The main PPV/CPV networks are Trafficvance, LeadImpact,
( v3 o7 _' }+ v' e$ _& AMediaTraffic, and AdOn Network.
3 g, i& b1 E% U# H3 m* xDon't popups get blocked by pop blocker software?
( n- V$ K, Q4 [/ ]2 ~No. Popups are served in a new browser window as if the visitor had opened the new window

How many popups get served to the visitor?
) W& E9 [# v* |, UThe number of popups served varies depending on the PPV network. Some pop more frequently
6 {) x& @( p) ]: H4 U1 y1 \7 f# b(LeadImpact), others less frequently (Trafficvance). PPV advertising companies make their money by6 q$ a1 ^- S" W
serving this kind of advertising, so they have to toe the line between keeping their software

T0 j z: x# z" B* NIsn't this type of software bad? Why would anyone keep it on their computer?
2 B( C8 k/ h$ sNo, this type of software doesn't harm the user's computer.' W! I2 ]1 q+ j, S, ^! J3 w
Companies that specialize in this type of traffic offer their visitor an incentive like screensavers, games,6 e; ^3 E, G( g2 H' Q
toolbars or videos to place the software on their computer. The visitor keeps the software in place so" ?; V$ U9 v$ q/ C. v, S1 i
that they can continue to have access to the incentive.

How to Get Accepted into a CPA Network
6 l; F, a3 t5 \% }In order to start marketing offers, it will be necessary to join one or more CPA networks. A good place
7 F3 T, w1 D+ [$ ato start looking for networks is Offervault which lists offers and lets you compare payouts across8 J% N; H: {* i: c2 ]0 e
different networks.
$ J1 I( w" G. \! h H+ N4 gOnce you find a network that you want to join, fill out the affiliate (sometimes called publisher)& W, p+ R. T+ i6 V
application and be as specific as possible about your promotion methods. Usually some time after; z* x7 Q3 Y( @% |
receiving your application, the company will call to interview you. The phone interview is a critical' l$ m0 h2 N# x$ @2 k- o# N. _
part of the application process, and most networks will deny your application outright if they can't get) Q d9 L7 M, L% x
you on the phone.
; a9 _0 c3 G4 ?. dOften, the person who does your phone interview will actually become your affiliate manager after

You might not relish at the idea of someone grilling you about your internet marketing methods over

What methods do you use to market offers?, }8 H4 |$ H1 m
Do you already have a website you will be using?

application. If you get denied, just keep applying or call someone on the phone and try again. Be5 `$ B8 x8 O% V
persistent. Also, getting a personal recommendation from someone who is already an active affiliate4 E# V- t5 o$ M1 a. w2 k% }* l
for the network can be helpful.

Frankly, there are great affiliate managers and horrible ones, and a good one can be worth their
) p7 H# |( c- K- g8 E6 T. vweight in gold. Start feeling them out from the start and try to get to know them. Once you get

- z+ W) N# P% ?6 e+ F" _8 q6 UGetting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said7 r( ]9 H+ T5 a, Q4 n6 T3 ]/ N# }
about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared
) Z' r! I9 \; l# I j7 u8 i6 dhost for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with
' n/ G9 G _' L* V9 Wwhoever else is on the same server as you.
% M, d" Y/ t! t |8 USpeed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast
# x; H; t4 G* F F# ^( a! lenough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3
- B; E3 t- p0 r: ?+ K+ K5 rseconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.
' ~0 n9 d6 Q% z* iTo explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a

In shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside
+ d1 G4 e, S( s* x9 Hthe fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will' |* k0 `& x3 F, `. a/ @4 }* t

Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than' X. s5 e3 J( t
the rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate) P- j5 ~+ g0 R- X" h0 K- U* v
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.7 Z5 E( J' c! J% W* q! Q4 s
If you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For5 @) X' O9 h4 Y- J8 ?
any type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.4 p; a2 c* i5 z/ J; d
In the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space5 c/ o# `) F; U6 }1 i9 |3 I: P8 f# i
inside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is
+ n. }) L6 o% D$ z! {partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time. J8 N4 U: Z* i" \. z- J
A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
/ B0 |2 {, h0 ~9 V3 Ibelong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more1 z$ g5 F( Q& C/ F7 c
traffic, faster.) U! J4 Q! _3 S+ ~' C( t
At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.

.net, .org extension doesn't really matter, this isn't a domain we're going to try to use to SEO rank for a

tracking software on your domain. This is really important, because it is necessary to track your

Tracking 202 is the hosted version of Prosper202. You can create a free account and then build your4 `; ]* p9 {( K1 `2 t, Y/ i. d
campaigns using the Tracking202 internet-based interface which is similar to the Prosper202 user, O1 U$ m& x- j* s$ P. V

If you choose this option, keep in mind that your tracking software, one of the most important parts of# I K# q9 A: l( C2 {# R

that all traffic is accepted.
9 S1 I8 n L) |* yFirst, I log into Ads4Dough and click on Campaigns, then Email/Zip submits. ~, L# n8 G+ V, @1 s
This is where I get my link for the offer, place my tracking pixel from Prosper202 or CPVLab, and can, w: H; d( w% r- i3 \, K% |
get creatives like banners or images specifically for the offer.

Before I do anything else, I'm going to place my tracking pixel from my tracking software so that I can3 J: D* i, E% Q1 ~
track my keywords. Without doing this, it isn't possible to see what's converting.
8 N2 L R% z( y7 f' f( XIn Prosper 202, your pixel is located under Setup → Get Postback/Pixel and the screen looks like this:
