Getting an internet hosting account is beyond the scope of this guide, but a few things need to be said* V! _9 ?6 T6 e
about internet hosting. In general, you get what you pay for with hosting. When you use a shared3 j+ M) Y1 C' Y
host for PPV traffic, you are putting yourself at huge risk because your bandwidth is shared with. n9 c6 C8 L8 L
whoever else is on the same server as you.5 x: H2 d0 l7 K S/ x
Speed is the name of the game in PPV traffic. Your offers and landing pages need to pop up fast/ Y, C' X r$ B9 E% W( U
enough that the visitor can't close the window before your pop up is even shown. You have about 3. T' R- _. \; f9 y: V3 `) N/ G( ~
seconds before the user can get that window shut. If your offer doesn't show in that time, tough luck.
4 J9 K3 P( `1 j# k7 lTo explain the difference between types of hosting packages, picture a refrigerator (the server) in a
# d# @% k9 F4 ihouse full of roommates (hosting customers).
0 s; b( o2 r8 E! T& NIn shared hosting, this is like having roommates where everyone has no specific designated area inside
" K! o% h& M. K+ |% ]the fridge where they are supposed to put their food. Everyone just jams their food in however it will
8 m; d9 H5 b+ l0 d4 C, E2 [' tfit.
: r2 U' p! p8 _5 S5 E- }* ^Say your roommate brings home a large turkey. They will then take up more of the refrigerator than
; K1 x% } C( |2 C% _; ethe rest of the roommates, by virtue of simply needing more space and resources to accommodate( E# ~7 s9 _8 d7 o( |1 \
their food. Everyone else's food in the house has less space to take advantage of.
3 ^, Z" g( d' j% H# JIf you have less server resources to take advantage of, your ability to serve popups will slow down. For
0 C) x4 l, h0 b" Qany type of hosting this is a bad thing, and especially while running PPV traffic.
1 {5 N( l0 Y* mIn the case of a virtual private server (VPS), everyone in the house has their own designated space
: d; G( U7 O* z: x+ w; ninside the fridge to put their food, and other roommates can't come into that space. The server is6 h2 J9 P. k$ B5 C2 O! b1 j" w9 z- u
partitioned, so that each customer can only use a specific amount of resources at any given time.. E' N- n3 J* V6 _. f- M- J
A dedicated server would be like having the whole fridge to yourself. All of the server's resources
3 M/ @) ]# U+ B8 a* ^belong to you and no one else can use up those resources. This makes it possible to serve much more
$ s, p# r- r: Itraffic, faster.
, ?, |* O s$ a3 @At the very minimum, you need a VPS to run PPV traffic, and at higher volumes, a dedicated server.2 i0 S& T/ }) c
