<p>With DNS Failover, Amazon Route 53 can help detect an outage of your 1 q Y2 x: ^( q% ?
website and redirect your end users to alternate locations where your 3 Q$ T$ F- O$ w3 ~! a
application is operating properly. When you enable this feature, Route . y1 V* l6 I+ j- M7 x, O
53 uses health checks—regularly making Internet requests to your 4 }. a! P% I& i8 F
application’s endpoints from multiple locations around the world—to ( r( I' ?0 S0 \& r% j
determine whether each endpoint of your application is up or down. </p>4 r$ l+ ?$ m0 o+ G! D( }

<p>For ELB endpoints, Route 53 evaluates the health of the load balancer* x) w7 H9 t' I! ^2 r" Y5 b) R' ~0 V
itself and the health of your application running on the EC2 instances ; W8 X! k0 |1 d' w2 T1 u3 w% o
behind it. If any part of the stack goes down, Route 53 detects the # M* u4 ]7 H% `+ _
failure, routes traffic away from the load balancer, and directs traffic 7 [, c0 K& x; R7 O- ?0 r
to other healthy ELB endpoints. Route 53 DNS Failover also supports EC2 - o4 W; B7 w2 a6 g+ a
endpoints as well as endpoints located in your own datacenter.</p> , Y5 B0 O7 b, z* e1 U

<p>Using Route 53 DNS Failover, you can run your primary application % B) q1 X+ X* W; Y& | i

unavailable. You can also take advantage of a simple backup site hosted 1 h+ ?1 D N2 g5 H
