Dear Amazon Web Services Customer,
$ j% U( Z, p9 I B

We are excited to announce that Route 53 DNS Failover now supports & a7 G D! w0 Z' r) t
Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) endpoints. Starting today, you can use $ [' M3 v& u o
Route 53’s existing health checking and DNS failover features for ( X- v' Q1 G0 j9 w
applications running behind an ELB, to increase redundancy and - J/ ~/ V2 O8 v% Z% Z: \
availability for these apps.
9 n& a1 v. p5 t. S' m3 M3 z5 {
; C3 h! h- `8 E+ `

With DNS Failover, Amazon Route 53 can help detect an outage of your - @4 R0 `* x% b4 I6 R2 K
website and redirect your end users to alternate locations where your 2 G4 i1 H5 g! @; K
application is operating properly. When you enable this feature, Route 9 l0 [ ^9 N( [
53 uses health checks—regularly making Internet requests to your ! D7 M3 a( H" t0 |
application’s endpoints from multiple locations around the world—to . t% G7 i/ m# A0 P+ o
determine whether each endpoint of your application is up or down.
& J) U# V: x+ x$ j3 L5 h0 X
( |+ G: @) S# |/ h9 z" T+ P

For ELB endpoints, Route 53 evaluates the health of the load balancer/ _% A7 S& V* i; ]0 D' _. b& |
itself and the health of your application running on the EC2 instances 0 v7 B* z! P' d" {) r
behind it. If any part of the stack goes down, Route 53 detects the # ~4 e5 i4 e M
failure, routes traffic away from the load balancer, and directs traffic' S4 \8 s N- v# h9 s
to other healthy ELB endpoints. Route 53 DNS Failover also supports EC2 ) @) p' ?4 B5 W" s( O$ O
endpoints as well as endpoints located in your own datacenter.
# ?( N* R: |$ e: J6 e& @

Using Route 53 DNS Failover, you can run your primary application 8 \4 r, x7 x; N" [; L3 n
simultaneously in multiple AWS regions around the world. Route 53 & p0 ]/ u" Z9 z9 ]# j: |
automatically removes from service any region where your application is 9 }( m+ i/ T& ^, _( E' ~
unavailable. You can also take advantage of a simple backup site hosted 9 s6 M0 r& \' X3 M7 Z& f y: ^, }7 x
on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), with Route 53 directing , U& p7 Z' M) [1 y
users to this backup site in the event that your application becomes & w5 D6 V, _" Z# O0 a1 W5 U* E) E
